The Hope Project
Mental Health illness which includes Depression, Anxiety, Child & Adolescent Mental & Behavioral Disorders, Disorders due to Substance & Sexual Abuse, Self Harm/Suicide amongst others is a global challenge.
According to the Annals of Nigerian Medicine, mental health disorders are estimated to peak at an alarming statistics of over 15% by the year 2020. This will disable more people than complications arising from AIDS, heart disease, accidents, and wars combined.
Another report from The Federal Ministry of Health reveals that over 20-30% of individuals amounting to 60 million people have mental health disorders out of 200 million Nigerians. Every life lost represents a loved one, friend or colleague..
In Nigeria, mental health awareness and advocacy against social stigma is on the rise but this isn’t enough. However, The Hope Project will achieve this by doing the following:
1. Provide support and care in form of Counseling & Rehabilitative services through BridgingSpace. Our circle/community practice Ubuntu & have experienced therapists who provide safe therapy for individuals.
2. Aid in improving awareness and knowledge of the seriousness of Mental Health Disorders as a public health problem globally.
3. Reduce stigma related occurrences associated through the use of non-sensational languages and letting individuals (especially young people) who are struggling with mental health issues know that they are not alone.
4. Engage in strategic outreaches and life skills workshops for young people aged 15 - 35 years of age that will erase debilitating indicators of Mental Health Disorders. This will include skill acquisition program (life & soft skills), career counseling, therapy & psychometric assessments and social hangouts.
Mental Health problems come in different faces sometimes with unnoticeable changes. It could be just anyone perhaps a friend, colleague or loved one.
We accept and understand that although mental health is a critical and important component, it is often a neglected part of “Health” as a whole. Thus this will serve as Contribution in helping to achieve “health for all goals”.
The Hope Project will be carried out in Calabar, Nigeria for socially marginalized community students in secondary and tertiary institutions with a focus on Career Counseling, CV development, life skills workshop and a pro bono therapeutic program and access to available opportunities from YOMOH. The project is expected to run on a weekly basis for 10 Saturdays.
Monitoring and Evaluation will be carried out with proven results delivered.
