A Community Under Siege For over three years, the peaceful rural town of Aku in Okigwe LGA, Imo State, has been caught in the grip of violent conflict and insecurity. What began as isolated incidents of unrest has now evolved into a terrifying humanitarian crisis. Armed attacks have forced thousands of families to flee, over 100 homes have been burned, schools, churches, and public markets destroyed, lives lost, and many people, especially women and children, now live in trauma, poverty, and displacement. Children have dropped out of school, widows have been left without support, and young people have lost both livelihoods and hope. Today, hundreds of women and children live in trauma, hunger, and fear. They need food, shelter, education, and hope.
The Aku crisis has left behind a humanitarian disaster. Many displaced women have become single mothers and breadwinners overnight. Children, traumatized and out of school, are at risk of exploitation and lifelong poverty. Without urgent action, an entire generation faces instability, hunger, and loss of opportunity. Why It Matters “I was in JSS3 when we fled. I want to go back to school, but we don’t even have a place to sleep, talk less of school fees.” — Chidera, 14, an internally displaced girl from Aku. The stories emerging from Aku are painful, real, and urgent. Yet, amidst the ruins, we see courage. We see women ready to start over. We see children who still dream of school. But they can’t do it alone. They need you.
The Empower Future Initiative is launching a comprehensive humanitarian response to support displaced families in Aku, Imo State. This project focuses on immediate relief, trauma healing, educational access, and long-term economic empowerment. We aim to restore hope and dignity to the most affected, especially women and children. Women's Empowerment: Equip widows, single mothers, and youth with sustainable skills for self-reliance. Micro-Grants: Provide startup kits and tools to 20 trained beneficiaries to launch small businesses. Food & Relief Kits: Deliver monthly food and hygiene packages to 100 displaced families. Education Access: Re-enroll 40 displaced children in school with full tuition, uniforms, and learning materials. Trauma Healing: Provide psychosocial counseling and trauma recovery support to survivors of violence.
