Getting A Period In Nigerian Prison Is Now A Problem
Female inmates in Kirikiri Prison for instance often can’t afford Pads. Awaiting-trial women who do not have someone bringing them feminine hygiene products from the outside, basically have to try and somehow survive. Most of the toiletries used by inmates at the Kirikiri Prison are provided by non-governmental and religious organizations – a problem for the female prisoners who might be having a heavy flow.
The extremely low number of pads provided to these women, causes them to have to wear a single pad for multiple days. As a woman who goes through multiple pads on a single heavy day, one can only imagine how uncomfortable this can get. Beyond comfort, this can lead to serious bacterial infections. The lack of hygienic products in prison settings is upsetting to say the least. Menstrual hygiene isn’t and shouldn’t be a luxury, it’s a basic human right and a necessity every menstruator should have.
On this year’s International World Health Day- April 7th to July 31st, we’ll be supplying female inmates across Nigeria with free packs of sanitary pads through our well-trained team of volunteers in the different states across the county. This is to help strengthen the hygiene situation in prisons and also to improve the health and general well-being of female inmate. visit our website @ www.societyforsafemotherhood.org.
