According to a report by UNICEF, one in ten African girls miss school due to the inconveniences caused by menstruation. This can be linked to the inability of young girls to afford menstrual products such as sanitary pads, tampons and/or menstrual cups. It does not help that many girls cannot afford the endless purchase of sanitary pads to be utilised monthly on average.
My friend, Chinenye Eze, and I have taken the initiative to provide schoolgirls in Enugu State, Nigeria, with sanitary pads to support schoolgirls affected by period poverty. Our goal is to give free sanitary pads to at least 300 girls to cover a minimum of 6 months for each girl. This will ensure that they are not over-burdened by unhygienic conditions or miss school when on their period. It is also hoped that this would contribute to the awareness being created about period poverty which negatively affects young girls and women.
N1,800 (~US$4) will ease the stress for each girl for 6 months. Join the challenge to #EndPeriodPoverty as we join the world to recognise and celebrate women in the month of March. This campaign will last till 31 March 2021 but the conversation will continue as you share and take action until real changes occur.
We implore well-meaning people who are moved towards contributing to this cause, to do so via this platform. We would equally appreciate donations of sanitary pads and arrange for pick-up of the same within Enugu. This project shall be carried out with the utmost transparency to ensure that all contributions go towards the provision of sanitary products to schoolgirls in Enugu.
