Donors are the lifeblood of nonprofits. Without them, charities would not exist but they’re hard to come by. There is a new type of donor out there and we need to understand how they want to be approached. This is what we need to do as nonprofits to make our donors choose us.
Understand the new type of donor
There are many different types of donors out there. One of the newest types is the donor that sees themselves as a consumer. This donor wants to be engaged in a two-way conversation with an organization and they want to know what their money is going towards. They want to know how their money will make a difference and how it will change someone’s life for the better.
Be transparent
When we are transparent with the donor, it builds trust. If your nonprofit can tell potential donors about their money going to a specific cause and not just say “all donations go towards helping children in need”, then you have a better chance of getting that donation.
To be transparent with our donors, we need to start being more honest. It’s okay if not all donations go directly to the cause but it should be stated from the beginning so there is no confusion. Nonprofits should be able to talk about what they do and how much of the donation goes where–it will make them seem more trustworthy.
Create a culture of appreciation
If you want donors to come your way more often, one thing you can do is create a culture of appreciation. You might not think it but when people donate money, they expect something in return. This could be an email thanking them for their donation or information about how the money is used. That’s why creating a culture of appreciation is so important because it makes the donor feel like they’re doing something worthwhile instead of just dropping some money and walking away.
Be responsive to donors’ needs
Whenever a donor reaches out to you, they’re looking for a specific outcome. They want to be heard and their needs fulfilled. As nonprofits, we should do all that we can to help them reach their goal. Whether that means sending information or helping curate a donation, the most important thing is being responsive.
Offer multiple ways to donate
Many donors will not want to donate over the phone. They may not feel comfortable giving their financial information over the phone or they may be on the go with limited time. For these reasons, it is important to offer multiple ways for donors to donate. With text messages and email campaigns, you can reach a wider audience of potential donors.
Encourage conversation with your donors
We need to make it easy for our donors to share their stories with the world. We can do this by encouraging them to get in touch with us and share what they do, how they want to be recognized, and how we can help them. This will encourage conversation, which is one of the most valuable things a nonprofit can have with a donor.
We also need to create conversation opportunities outside of our direct contact with donors. Let’s say you have an annual bike ride fundraiser. You could put out sponsorship packages that include things like your charity’s logo on the hoodie or the back of a bike seat. This will encourage more people to talk about your organization and get other people interested in donating.
