Black charities have been helping people since before the civil rights movement. Now, with the help of the internet and social media, there are more Black-owned and-run black charities than ever before. There are over 150 black-founded charitable organizations that support and work in a variety of fields. Here are five of the best black charities to support.
The NAACP
The NAACP is one of the oldest Black-founded charitable organizations in the D.C. area, and the member in charge is Nelson Dennis. Dennis recently said “Not only is there a task force and an education committee, but also an establishment committee, women’s committee, and elders committee.
The NAACP has a wide range of activities and programs that focus on improving the lives of African Americans living in the District. Some examples include providing education and opportunity, fighting for civil rights, working to improve public services such as health care and housing, protesting discrimination or violence against black people, helping those affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes, and more.
The African American Historical Foundation
The African American Historical Foundation “accepts and manages both grants and sponsorship from other organizations to extend the lesser-known historical story of African descendants in America.” The ABHF’s unique mission is “promoting awareness and disseminating knowledge of the rich history, culture, and achievements of African Americans.” Among their best uses for funding is total annual activities.
Healing House
The Healing House Foundation responds to crises affecting the African American community by providing health care services. They often collaborate with the homeless community in public housing. For example, with grants, they have provided medications, supplies, and other assistance, among many other important things. The African Blacks Health Initiative has also taken care of good causes at local primary schools as well as handing out supplies to students who are homeless.
The League of United Latin American Citizens
The League of United Latin American Citizens has played important role in maintaining the Latino culture. It fights for immigration issues, provides immigration services, and helps those without immigration papers. Their strong record in electoral activities afforded them the distinction of being named one of only twenty nationally recognized organizations for their dedication to having a voice in government policy. Their major accomplishments have been integrating school curriculums, Latin American Studies, and increased international business partnerships among several others. These lead toward better intercultural ties between Latinos in the United States as well as push back against discrimination with political measures.
The National Urban League
The National Urban League has frequently led calls against racially-based laws. They bring attention to issues such as driving and competitive stop set by many police officers at the time. With the decline of manufacturing jobs due to machinery, the Urban League attacked politicians who proclaimed themselves as proponents of business development, believing them to be radical in their dedication to keeping blacks at a lower financial level. They have challenged discriminatory government policies on a wide range of issues including minimum wage and housing subsidies; raising funds that they continually use on black-owned firms with which they work.
The Martin Luther King Institute
The Martin Luther King Institute is an organization that fought against racial ideologies that are often equivalent to those of segregationists. The Institute condemns economic inequalities and unfair lending practices present in neighborhoods historically associated with black populations in exchange for lower and reduced property taxes, which they believe is discriminatory. They also unveil instances of inconsistent policing practices and the discrimination of minorities by police forces. Their goal is to create a community free from fear, in which neighborhoods are safe and cooperating to reach their full potential.
