THE PROBLEM
Some of the challenges facing ex women convicts in Nigeria after release from prison are: Re-establishing a home and family life, finding affordable housing and meeting other basic needs; securing employment that pays a sufficient income; these challenges either overtly or covertly has a tremendous negative effect on the State and Nigerians and inimical to development. Often without the protection of family and communities they had before incarceration, these women can be vulnerable to, forced prostitution, trafficking and any number of other violent situations just to survive after prison. The need therefore to train these incarcerated mothers after their release on vocational work that would provide them the means of livelihood and economic empowerment cannot be over-emphasized
WAHT WE WANT TO DO
There is need for counselling to accelerate effort in collaborating with other stakeholders in recovering and rehabilitating these ex women convict at the shortest possible time by way of socio-economic integration. 1)We will ensure that women released from prison have proper documentation so they can apply for transitional benefits and unsubsidized employment. 2) We will also ensure vocational training in and out of prison that is tied to viable labor market opportunities for them 3) We will educate ex-inmate women about their rights and potential employers about the illegality and consequences of improperly rejecting job applicants with criminal records. 4) Identify sources of transitional income that will assist women to participate in secondary and post-secondary educational programs to enhance their competitiveness in the job market and 5) Link women during their incarceration with job training centers in the communities to which they will be returning.
