Benefits of having a Sensory Unit in an Autism Centre.
A Sensory Room which will be the first of its kind in the Niger Delta Located in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital will be a specially designed room which combines a range of stimuli to help develop and engage their senses. Creating a Sensory Room is important for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The benefits are:
1. Improves balance, movement and spatial orientation: The unit gives individuals a Sensory diet, promoting language, aiding fine and gross motor skills and hand and eye co-ordination. It also gives them a safe place to learn in, promoting individual's self-help skills as a well as moral and cultural development.
2. Sensory stimulation: by encouraging the individual to engage and explore the environment then it can have positive effects on their ability to react and interact with a larger world around them.
3. Sensory units help to facilitate the development of the nervous system's ability to process sensory input in a more normal way.
4. Sensory units helps to develop a individual's sight, sound, touch and hearing and encourages independence.
5. Enhance learning through play: sensory stimulation can engage different areas of the brain, helping children absorb and retain more information and better meeting the needs of the individual.
6. Tackle problems with behaviour: sensory environments can be highly absorbing, providing a moment of comfort and calm for overactive and distressed individuals, and helping inactive individuals to feel better and engage. Is also improves focus.
7. Sensory products help with a variety of sensory and developmental needs for individuals with ASD, learning disabilities and even dementia.
8. Sensory units are needed in autism centres because it helps to cater for individuals with emotional, behavioural and learning needs, and sensory protects should be the first step in that direction.
